Употребление определенного артикля "the" с географическими наименованиями
Существуют несколько случаев употребления определенного артикля с географическими названиями.
Артикль не употребляется:
- В названиях частей света и континентов: Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, North (South) America.
- С названиями регионов: Latin America, Northern Africa, South-East Asia.
- В названиях стран: Great Britain, England, Russia.
- В названиях городов: London, Moscow, Paris.
- В названиях некоторых озер, если используется слово Lake: Lake Seliger, Lake Baikal.
- В названиях горных вершин и некоторых островов: Everest, Elbrus, Cyprus, Cuba.
Определенный артикль используется:
- В названиях следующих регионов: the Far East, the Middle East, the Caucasus, the Ruhr, the Tyrol,the Arctic, the Antarctic, the Crimea, the Lake District.
- В официальных названиях стран. при наличии слов federation, republic, union, state, kingdom: the Russian Federation, the German Republic, the United States of America, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
- В названиях стран во множественном числе: the Netherlands, the Philippines.
- В названиях рек, морей, океанов, проливов, озер, каналов, водопадов: the Atlantic Ocean, the Black Sea, the Thames, the English Channel, the Gulf Stream, the Suez Canal, the Niagara Falls.
- В названиях пустынь, горных цепей и групп островов: the Sahara Desert, the Pamir, the Urals, the Hawaii, the Bermudas.
Исключения: определенный артикль употребляется в названиях некоторых стран: the Vatican, the United States of America, the United Kingdom, the Ukraine, the United Arab Emirates, the Commonwealth of Independent States, the Congo, the Lebanon, the Hague.
